Italy minister: Alitalia to be sold to best bidder, Lufthansa welcome

Rome (dpa) – Alitalia will be sold to the highest bidder and Germany’s Lufthansa is welcome to make an offer for it, Transport Minister Graziano Delrio said in a Wednesday interview, ruling out a government bailout for Italy’s near-bankrupt airline. Alitalia is in deep trouble since employees rejected in a referendum that ended Monday a rescue plan based on deep job and wage cuts. Its board has initiated proceedings for the company to be put under receivership.
“The company will be sold to the best bidder,” Delrio told the La Stampa newspaper. “Somebody believed that there would have been yet another public rescue. I will say it clearly: there will not be one,” he added.
Asked about the possibility of Lufthansa, Europe’s largest airline, taking over Alitalia, Delrio said: “There are no obstacles [to it], but it is up to shareholders to take decisions. The ball is in their court.”
